Seven in ten UK workers are in roles AI will touch
Skills England put the figure at 70 per cent. That is not seven in ten jobs disappearing, it is seven in ten jobs changing shape.
Skills England's 2026 annual report found that around 70 per cent of UK workers are in occupations containing tasks that AI could perform or enhance. It is a large number and it gets quoted carelessly, so it is worth being precise about what it says.
Tasks, not jobs
The measure is at task level. A role made up of twenty tasks where three could be automated counts inside that 70 per cent, and so does a role where fifteen could. The finding is about how widely the change reaches, not how deep it goes in any one job.
That distinction matters when you are planning. The realistic question for most employers is not whether a role survives, it is which parts of it get handed over and what the person does with the time that comes back.
The government target
The same report set out an AI Skills Boost target of 10 million workers trained by 2030. Whatever you make of national targets, the direction of policy is clear enough to plan against: the funding and the frameworks are being pointed at this.
What it means for a smaller employer
- Assume the roles change rather than vanish, and plan the redesign
- Train the people who already understand the process, they will spot what is safe to hand over
- Decide in advance what the returned time is for, or it will be absorbed silently
- Write down what changed, because nobody will remember in six months
